Application for doctoral programmes starts 1 April 2026
At the University of Jyväskylä, you can complete doctoral degrees in philosophy, education, business, sports science, psychology, technology, health sciences and social sciences, depending on the doctoral programme and specialisation option. To be eligible for doctoral education, you must have completed a relevant Master's degree awarded by a university or university of applied sciences, or a relevant study programme abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for doctoral training.
About 240 new students join our doctoral programmes each year. 30% of them come from abroad. To be awarded a doctorate, the student admitted to a doctoral programme must complete the required studies, demonstrate independent and critical thinking in the field of research, write a doctoral dissertation, and defend it in public. If you study full-time, the target completion time for a doctoral degree is three to four years.
