Consider your fellow students and avoid using fragrances

The University of Jyväskylä is a fragrance-free and smoke-free place of work and study, and we encourage everyone on campus to take this into account. Show that you care – come fragrance-free!

By avoiding strong scents, you promote a healthy working and studying environment and respiratory health. Strong scents can cause unpleasant symptoms such as cold-like symptoms, headaches, migraines or nausea. Avoiding perfumes is an easy way to be considerate of others at the university. Everyone can reduce the amount of fragrance in the air by, for example, using less perfume and aftershave.

The University's safety and security regulations also encourage people to avoid using fragrances and smoking.

"We encourage all members of the university community to reduce their own scent load and to tell others if they find another person's scent disturbing. The easiest way to reduce scents is to refrain from using fragrances when coming to work," says Piia Löppönen, Occupational Health and Safety Manager at the University of Jyväskylä.

Fragrance-free environments are also taken into account in events organised by the University of Jyväskylä. Events are accessible by default, which also means they are fragrance-free. This is highlighted, for example, in event announcements and other communication materials. The fragrance-free policy is also indicated by signs on the university campuses.

Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is only permitted in designated areas on campus. See the map for smoking areas.
