MA (Educ.) Aaron J. Peltoniemi (Department of Teacher Education) investigated students’ learning experiences in technology-supported environments. Although digital technologies are widely used in higher education, we know less about how they shape the interactions through which learning takes place. My research explored this question across three studies, using qualitative analyses of student interviews and collaborative learning.

The first study, based on interviews, showed that web conferencing technology reshapes the notions and boundaries of time-space for learning and interaction. The second study, based on collaborative learning, found that technology such as a computer can act as a participant in learning, influencing interaction and collaboration without necessarily facilitating them. The third study, also based on interviews, showed that digital learning platforms such as Moodle embed ideas and cultural assumptions that can support or constrain learning in addition to pedagogical choices.

Overall, the dissertation suggests that digital learning is not just a way to teach, but a way to be in education. This is because digital tools shape how students can participate, interact, and learn with others. Researchers and higher education providers should consider not only students’ individual needs but also how technology shapes the ways they can engage in learning.

MA (Educ.) Aaron Peltoniemi defends his doctoral dissertation in teacher education "A way to teach and be?”: Investigating the time and space, people, and interface in technology-enhanced learning".

The opponent is professor emeritus Eero Ropo (Tampere University) and custos is senior lecturer, docent Tamás Péter Szabó (University of Jyväskylä).

The event will be held in English.
