History of science explored at Jyväskylä Summer School

Jyväskylän yliopiston kansainvälinen kesäkoulu (Jyväskylä Summer School, JSS) nostaa 3.–14.8.2026 esiin tieteen historian merkityksen osana kulttuurista ja tieteellistä sivistystä. Kesäkoulun History of Science ‑kurssit tarkastelevat, miten luonnontieteet ovat muotoutuneet vuosisatojen aikana alkemian laboratoriokokeista kvanttimekaniikan vallankumoukseen.

Jyväskylä Summer School has been an established part of the academic tradition and international activities of the University of Jyväskylä for several decades. The long-standing Summer School has provided generations of students and researchers with an opportunity to delve into topical themes in science and technology, learn from the world’s leading experts, and build international networks. The continuity of the Summer School reflects a commitment to high-quality teaching, multidisciplinary approaches, and the long-term development of scientific knowledge. 

“One of this year’s Summer School themes is the history of science, which fits well with the school’s long-standing tradition of viewing science as part of a broader historical and cultural continuum,” describes the Chair of Jyväskylä Summer School, Jani Moilanen from the University of Jyväskylä. 

From alchemical tradition to quantum physics

The course “History of Science: Alchemy as a Predecessor of Modern Chemistry” examines the role of alchemy in the development of modern chemistry. The lectures are delivered by Professor Lawrence Principe (Johns Hopkins University), one of the world’s leading experts on the history of alchemy. His research has reshaped our understanding of alchemy’s scientific and cultural importance.

Another course, From Classical to Quantum Mechanics, explores key turning points in the history of physics, focusing on the transition from the classical worldview to the age of quantum mechanics. This course is led by Professor Ismo Koponen from the University of Helsinki. He is an expert in physics education and the history of physics. In his teaching, he integrates perspectives from science, philosophy, and cultural history.

An open lecture on the history of science

The Summer School programme also includes a public lecture open to all, exploring the connections between the birth of modern physics and cultural life in the Weimar Republic. The lecture sheds light on how scientific transformation, art, philosophy, and the broader social atmosphere were intertwined in early twentieth-century Europe, and how these interactions helped lay the foundations of modern physics.

“The public lecture offers an interesting perspective on the history of science as part of broader cultural change and is directed at friends of science, culture, and history alike,” Moilanen points out. 

Over 30 years of international excellence in teaching 

The Jyväskylä Summer School was established in 1991, when the University of Jyväskylä sought new ways to strengthen its international visibility. From the outset, the Summer School was designed to provide high-quality instruction for master’s and doctoral students in various fields of natural sciences. Over the years, the JSS has grown into one of Finland’s most well-known international summer schools, hosting more than 7,000 students from over 110 countries. Its teaching staff has included hundreds of distinguished researchers from around the world. The Summer School is held annually, and its programme is renewed each year around topical and multidisciplinary courses.
