JYU is recruiting a high-profile international researcher in applied language studies, funded by the Research Council of Finland

The Research Council of Finland has awarded a total of € 22.5 million to recruit high-profile researchers from outside Finland. Thanks to this funding, nine international researchers will be appointed as professors and establish their own research groups at Finnish universities. The University of Jyväskylä received €2.5 million to recruit Professor Maria Kuteeva.

She is currently a professor of English linguistics at Stockholm University, having worked there since 2008. She completed her doctorate in English at the University of Manchester in 2000. Professor Kuteeva is one of the most cited researchers in her field worldwide. She will take up her position as Professor of Applied Language Studies at the Centre for Applied Language Studies and the Department of Language and Communication Studies on 1 January 2027.

Kuteeva’s research has focused on the use of English in multilingual university settings. At JYU, she will lead the profiling action “Language, Diversity and Participation in Technology-Driven Society” (LADiTS). Her research team aims to examine the socio-ideological, interactional and community dimensions of language. The project will involve studying the impact of artificial intelligence on language use, linguistic diversity, participation, and the role of technology in communication. The study will also address differences in multilingualism between privileged and marginalised groups.

The project supports the University of Jyväskylä’s goal of developing teaching and research in Finnish and Swedish as second languages. The study aims to identify ways to reduce inequality and marginalisation so that more young people from immigrant backgrounds can participate in higher education. At the same time, the team will study the impact of technological development on people’s actions, creativity, learning, and ways of producing information.

The funding is intended to strengthen the research profiles of universities. Kuteeva’s project is related to the University of Jyväskylä’s profiling areas RECLAS and MultiLEAP. “It’s a great honour to be invited to join the dynamic and vibrant Applied Language Studies environment at the University of Jyväskylä, and I look forward to this new challenge,” Kuteeva comments.
