Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics (JSBE) recognised for high-quality teaching and research – AACSB accreditation awarded for six more years

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) accreditation is the most significant international recognition for an educational institution of business and economics for high-quality teaching and research. Only about five percent of all institutions in the field have the accreditation.
“The AACSB accreditation is granted to higher education institutions that are able to demonstrate the quality of their teaching, research, curriculum development and students’ learning results,” says Stephanie M. Bryant, Executive Vice President and Chief Accreditation Officer of AACSB International.
JSBE is committed to responsibility and societal impact
AACSB considered JSBE’s strong commitment to responsibility and societal impact as particular strengths. JSBE actively participates in many international networks that promote responsible education and research and responsible business (e.g. PRME, RRBM, EBEN and GRLI). JSBE is also a founding member of FIBS, the largest corporate responsibility network in the Nordic countries.
According to AACSB, one of JSBE’s strengths is research that deals with societal issues and changes in all three focus areas of the faculty. The impact of JSBE’s research has also grown as a result of increased international cooperation and peer-reviewed articles. AACSB valued the many JSBE research projects related to responsibility, the environment and biodiversity which have had positive effects on society.
In addition, AACSB noted that JSBE offers international master’s degree programmes in corporate environmental management and, in cooperation with the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, in the responsible management and business of sport.
Systematic assurance of learning process, bold utilisation of new technologies
In education, AACSB valued JSBE for its systematic assurance of learning (AoL) process. The process covers all degree programmes in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies and executive education.
JSBE was also praised for its role as an international trailblazer in the utilisation of artificial intelligence in studies. It also uses new technologies extensively otherwise in teaching.
Reaccreditation strengthens the international profile
The renewed AACSB accreditation strengthens JSBE’s international profile even further and offers JSBE new opportunities in the international education and research market.
“We are very happy and proud – the AACSB accreditation is important for JSBE as well as for the whole University. The results and high quality of our active, systematic, and long-term development of operations are visible through our accreditations. Our quality work has involved a huge number of people and I want to thank all staff members, students, and partners for their cooperation in the continuous development of quality in our operations,” says Dean, Professor Hanna-Leena Pesonen.
The international peer review group of AACSB visited JSBE on 24–26 March 2024. The group reviewed, among other aspects, the qualifications of the teaching and research staff, the quality and impact of research results and the implementation of degree programmes. The evaluation group included Dean Deborah Spake (Kent State University, USA), Dean Stephen Hardy (University of Hull, UK) and Professor Dana Brown (Carleton University, Canada).
Keeping the AACSB accreditation requires continuous improvement of quality and development of operations. The accreditation is assessed every six years.
