On 6 November 2025, the Faculty of Mathematics and Science will celebrate its 60-year journey
Established in 1965, the faculty has grown over the decades into a major centre of research and education incorporating world-class research, a multidisciplinary approach, and a strong community spirit. During this significant year, the faculty will present its achievements and the people behind them as well as its future direction, while celebrating its long and impressive history, which continues to this day.
The daytime event provides an opportunity to stop and celebrate the shared journey
The celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science start with coffee and cake in Agora, offering an immediate opportunity for relaxed social interaction and the exchange of the latest news. After this, the official part of the day’s celebrations will begin, featuring festive speeches, musical performances and congratulatory messages. Speakers will include Jari Ojala, Rector of the University of Jyväskylä, Jouni Flyktman, Vice President at IQM Quantum Computers, and Professor Johanna Mappes. The University Symphony Orchestra Sinfis will provide the music.
“The daytime celebration has a more academic focus, highlighting the history, achievements and future direction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science,” says Dean Mikko Mönkkönen. “The event provides dignified festive moments for celebrating the faculty’s 60-year journey with students, staff, alumni and invited guests.”
Celebrating with alumni
Nearly 150 alumni are coming to celebrate the faculty and they will also enjoy a programme designed especially for them, having the chance to get familiar with the departments’ current research projects and learning environments. The programme provides excellent opportunities to network and exchange ideas with familiar and new faces from years gone by.
“It’s wonderful to see so many alumni coming to celebrate,” says Mönkkönen. “It shows a strong connection to our faculty, and that the experiences and community spirit gained over the years are still important.”
An evening full of joy and social interaction
The day of celebrations culminates in an evening party for faculty staff, alumni and invited guests. The programme includes speeches, music, a video presentation showcasing the faculty’s research, and a stand-up performance by André Wickström. Mikko ‘Peltsi’ Peltola will host the event and he is also a patron of the faculty’s fundraising campaign to save freshwater pearl mussels from extinction.
“The evening party provides an opportunity to take a break from our daily routines,” says Mönkkönen. “Let’s enjoy the evening together in good company, with delicious food and a well-rounded programme. Just as we should on a proper celebration day.”
Student culture in the festive spirit of the year
The faculty did not forget its students during the festive year but supported them by sponsoring a grandiose student party that took place on Wednesday 22 October 2025 in the Aalto Hall – the heart of student culture. The event brought students together to celebrate the student community, academia and the faculty’s milestone year. The party was organised by the student associations of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science.
Donations for mussel research
The Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä hopes that possible donations are directed to freshwater pearl mussel research at the Konnevesi Research Station. By donating, you support the research carried out in Konnevesi and help protect this endangered species from extinction.
Congratulations to the Faculty of Mathematics and Science!
