QS Sustainability 2026: University of Jyväskylä improves its position in global sustainability ranking
The QS Sustainability Ranking assesses how universities address challenges related to the environment, society, and governance. The ranking focuses particularly on a university’s social impact, including the impact of its research and the sustainability competencies of its graduates.
“The University of Jyväskylä did quite well in terms of social and environmental impact and good governance, but of course, there’s still room for improvement,” says Expert Ulla Helimo. “The QS ranking results show how sustainability and responsibility are reflected in our research and teaching, as well as in our everyday practices at the organisational level.”
The University of Jyväskylä ranked highest in the health and wellbeing category, rising to 102nd place in the global ranking. The category assesses a university’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of its students and society at large.
The QS Sustainability ranking assesses universities’ social impact in five indicators: employability and opportunities, equality, health and wellbeing, impact of education, and knowledge exchange. Environmental impacts are assessed across three indicators: sustainable education, sustainable institutions, and sustainable research.
To obtain a QS Sustainability rating, a university must be committed to combating climate change, have a sufficient number of publications related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and be included in the QS World University Rankings.
The assessment draws on numerical and publication data, alumni and employer surveys, and national statistics.
The top-ranked universities were the University of Lund and University of Toronto.
