The University of Jyväskylä has adopted principles for a safer and more responsible space
The creation and implementation of the principles was defined in the JYU’s Equality, non-discrimination and accessibility plan for 2025–2026 as an university‑level measure.
The purpose of the principles for a safer and more responsible space at the University of Jyväskylä is to enable equal and safe participation and interaction for all members of the university community.
The principles cover the following themes:
- Shared responsibility
- Psychological, social, and physical safety
- Respectful encounters and interaction
- Right to participate as oneself
- Correcting mistakes and learning from them
- A culture of strong self-reflection
- Addressing issues
The principles for a safer and more responsible space further specify how the university community’s good practices are applied. We take the principles for a safer and more responsible space into account in everything we do.
The chair of the Social sustainability and responsibility development group Eija Sevón, summarizes the benefits of adopting the principles: “The principles for a safer and more responsible space increase opportunities for inclusion and interaction within our university community. This happens by strengthening equality and the sense of safety, as well as by preventing harassment and inappropriate behaviour.”
These principles for a safer and more responsible space were prepared in spring 2026 in collaboration with the university community at the University of Jyväskylä.
We address conduct that is contrary to the principles for a safer and more responsible space, as well as harassment, discrimination, unacceptable conduct and inappropriate treatment in accordance with the university’s guideline.
