Student and Academic Services are inviting applications from interested students during from 2 to 22 February 2026 for approximately 250 small group tutor positions for autumn 2025.

All tutor positions will be applied for simultaneously and using the same application form. International degree students can apply to become a degree tutor or an exchange tutor. You can apply for both positions, but you can only be selected for one.

What is tutoring?

Student tutors guide new students in their own field in university studies and student life. Degree and exchange tutors also support students arriving from abroad in settling in Finland and adapting to their new country. Tutoring is done in small groups. Tutoring mainly takes place during orientation week and at the beginning of the autumn semester, but the support of a tutor is needed later on during the first year as well. Some tutors will become Early August tutors to help students arriving to August language courses.

More detailed information about tutoring can be found on the For Students page.

Tutor training

This responsible task does not require peer experience alone; those who become tutors undergo tutor training. Please make a note of the training dates when you apply. Participation in the training is a prerequisite for working as a tutor, if you have not previously held the same position at the University of Jyväskylä.

In addition to the training days, tutor training includes independent study, a summer assignment and reporting on tutoring.

Joint tutor day for all tutors:

  • Wednesday, 6 May 2026 (in the afternoon, exact time to be confirmed later)

Peer tutor training

Peer tutoring applies to Finnish degree programmes only. The dates for peer tutor training can be found in the Finnish translation of this page.

Degree tutor training

Degree tutors complete the same training as peer tutors. In addition, they complete an arrival‑services training organised by the university's International Office.

Degree tutor training dates:

  • Reception training for degree tutors 15 April from 9 to 12 o'clock.
  • JYY tutor training (alternative dates)
    • Friday 17 April 2026 from 9 to 16 o'clock
    • Saturday 18 April 2026 from 9 to 16 o'clock

The JYY dates are alternative and will cover the same content, so each (new) degree tutor will attend either of the two. Tutors will be assigned to either date based on a separate survey after selection.

In addition, all degree tutors (including those who have previously served as tutors) will participate in a joint tutor day on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.

Training for exchange tutors

The training for exchange tutors is jointly organised by JYY and the University of Jyväskylä’s International Office.

Exchange tutor training lasts three days and will be held from Tuesday to Thursday, 21–23 April, from 9 to 12 o'clock.

In addition, all exchange tutors (including those who have previously served as tutors) will participate in a joint tutor day on Wednesday, 6 May 2026.

Tutor reward

Tutors receive 2 credits for completing the tutor training and acting as a tutor. Credits can only be awarded once for the same tutor role (peer, exchange, degree).

All tutors (including those who have previously served as tutors) will also receive a monetary compensation of 14 euros per hour. Peer and exchange tutors will be compensated for a maximum of 30 hours and degree tutors for a maximum of 45 hours.

Apply by 22 February!

You can apply for a tutor position using an online form. The form will open on Monday, 2 February 2026 at 9:00 (Finnish time).

Before filling in the form, please read the instructions on the Tutoring information on the university's webpage carefully. The guide provides detailed information on the different tutor roles and their duties, selection criteria, tutor training, the number of tutors to be selected and the reward.

The application form closes on Sunday, 22 February 2026 at 23:59.

All applicants for peer and degree tutor will receive results of the selections by email on Monday 23 March.

Exchange tutor applicants (who do not have previous experience as an exchange tutor) will be invited to a group interview. Interviews will be held from 2 March onwards, and the results will be announced by Monday 30 March.
