Dr Geoff Luck is Senior Researcher in Musicology in the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies (MACS) and Adjunct Professor of Experimental Psychology in the Faculty of Education and Psychology. He is Director of the Sound Science Lab, Co-PI of the Research Council of Finland-funded Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and Brain (2022-2029), Chair of the Joint Seminar on Music, Sport and Health, and Faculty representative of the Jyväskylä Brain and Mind consortium. Geoff holds a PhD in Psychology and is an expert in quantifying and predicting how we perceive, understand, and experience music and other creative stimuli. A common theme in Geoff's interdisciplinary work is understanding and predicting human experience and behaviour at scale. His teaching responsibilities span a range of topics, including music psychology, neuroscience, and sport & health. Geoff has led successful externally-funded projects including The Kinematics and Dynamics of Musical Communication (Academy Fellowship, 2008-2013), Gigbuds (TEKES, 2013-2015), and AUDISSION (Business Finland, 2024-2025). His current portfolio includes The Rhythm of Life (Research Council of Finland, 2023-2027), MPOWER (Research Council of Finland ACTIVE Programme, 2025-2028), and COMETS (Foundation for Economic Education, 2026-2027). These projects include both basic and commercialisation research and involve collaboration with Finnish and international stakeholders. Geoff is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Musicae Scientiae.
My research is situated at the intersection of the creative and brain sciences and focuses on the perception, cognition, and impact of music and other multimodal stimuli in daily life and applied settings. Key research topics include rhythmic & expressive movement, mental health & function, and information retrieval & intelligent computing.
