Biography
I work at the Centre for Applied Language Studies as a research-oriented senior lecturer. In research and teaching, the following topics in applied linguistics are particularly close to my heart and my core area of work:
- language assessment: validity, fairness and impact of assessment, rater behaviour
- changes in adult writing and literacy assessment related to the digitalisation of society
- multilingualism and (second) language learning, in particular Finnish as a second and foreign language
- later language development (Finnish as a mother tongue)
- vocabulary as part of functional language skills
- language beliefs and language-aware pedagogy.
In my current job, my research is closely linked to the YKI-tests (The National Certificates of Language Proficiency), especially to the Finnish language examinations (https://www.oph.fi/en/national-certificates-language-proficiency-yki; ykitesti.solki.jyu.fi), and the activities of the Finnish Network for Language Education Policies (https://www.kieliverkosto.fi/en). In YKI-related research projects, the research focuses on the quality of the examination tasks and assessment, on rater behaviour, as well as on factors related to the language skills of the participants and the effects of participation in the examinations (test impact). The research runs parallel to the development work of YKI examinations and the societal needs for language assessment. Current areas for development and research include e.g. the digitalisation of language tests and the test impact, as well as updating the YKI assessment criteria.
I am happy to discuss cooperation on the above themes. My job is research-focused, but I also enjoy supervising theses and being involved in a wide range of stakeholder work. In the past, I have worked as a teacher at different levels of education, with both children and adults. Feel free to contact me!
