Biography

I am a researcher of environmental and sustainability education in the Finnish Institution for Educational Research, in Eco-social Sustainability and Education (ESSE) -team. My main focus of interest is on environmental education policies, sustainability competencies, and schools. My research examines schools as the agents for change in ecological transition and understanding the relationship between humans and the environment. I see sustainability at schools as a systemic and multilevel phenomenon of learning. I use mainly qualitative methodologies. I have applied for example Cultural Historical Activity Theory Theory of Expansive Learning (Engeström), Practice Architecture Theory (Kemmis), and models of wisdom (Kallio & al.).

Research interests

Currently, I work with multiple projects in our research team Eco-social Sustainability and Education (ESSE).

We study in ECF4CLIM project sustainability competences and the change on different levels of education. The focus is both on individual and collective sustainability competences. One of the main theories we use is the theory of Practice Architectures (Kemmis).

In Wisdom in Practice (WiP) -research project, in my sub-study, I study the planning of the Basic Multidisciplinary Studies in Sustainability Transitions -module in JYU. I focus on the possible development of wisdom through the module.

Crea+Bird project starts in autumn 2024: https://www.jyu.fi/en/news/the-creabird-consortium-received-eu400-000-e….

In already finished VISIOS project we studied Skills and Education Needs in the Green Transition. I studied in my sub-study education on different levels from a sustainability competence viewpoint. We wrote recommendations on changes in education and learning environments.

In my previous research, I focused on the ecological sustainability of Finnish comprehensive schools. I studied steering documents, curriculum, dilemmas in everyday practices, and development from a sustainability point of view. My theoretical framework was the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) and the Theory of Expansive Learning.(Engeström).
