Hydrogen Production Optimization, Storage Systems, and Ecosystem development (H2POSSE)

The EU co-funded H2POSSE project, granted by the Central Finland Regional Council, develops the region's hydrogen economy by combining advanced electrolyser technology, safe hydrogen storage solutions and strong R&D expertise. The project will generate new knowledge about hydrogen production, storage and transport – specific strengths identified in the region – and create new business opportunities for companies. In collaboration with research institutes, companies and municipalities, an ecosystem is being built to support innovation, industrial renewal and the transition to carbon neutrality.

Project description

The H2POSSE project develops solutions for the hydrogen economy, particularly green hydrogen production and storage, in Central Finland, and actively works to develop the regional hydrogen economy ecosystem, bringing a particular R&D perspective to the field. Hydrogen production focuses on new, advanced electrolyser technology and storage solutions that are particularly suitable for transport applications in terms of size. The use of hydrogen in transport has been identified as one of Central Finland's strengths in the region's recently completed hydrogen economy roadmap. Storage in solid materials can also provide a safe way to store hydrogen while creating new, higher value-added uses for the region's bio- and
side streams.
The H2POSSE project will produce valuable new information and expertise on hydrogen production, storage and use. The project also includes a separate investment project. The applied research and development carried out in the project will open up new opportunities for companies in the region in the hydrogen economy business. In ecosystem work, research institutes, companies, municipalities and other stakeholders can work together to advance the development of the region, thereby enabling increased RDI activity, the emergence of new innovations, the strengthening of business life and the renewal of industry towards carbon neutrality.
The H2POSSE project is being implemented jointly by VTT and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä. Companies, municipalities in the region and other parties interested in the development of the hydrogen economy are also involved. The results will be widely available for use.
