Towards Responsible AI for Education (AI-EMOT Consortium)

This project, funded by the Academy of Finland, investigates the learning and teaching of programming, as well as how students’ emotions influence collaborative problem-solving and learning outcomes, particularly in environments that utilize artificial intelligence. Using longitudinal research and multimodal data, the project is developing ethical, AI-supported methods to promote learning and student engagement. The research findings will help promote effective and human-centered programming education and generate new knowledge about the interaction between artificial intelligence and people.

Project description

Improving emotional support in learning and the utilization of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) are essential to address challenges in higher education, such as high dropout rates, the growing demand for professionals in Europe, and advancing toward a resilient learning ecosystem that increases human capital. Specifically, emotions play a crucial role in information technology education, where many students struggle in foundational courses like programming.

This research will explore how emotions influence and support collaborative problem-solving (CPS) in programming education, using scaffolding techniques called scripts to guide learning and teamwork. From the technological point of view, the research examines how AIED integrates with emotional support, personalized learning, and CPS. The research considers the EU's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act that sets requirements for ethical and transparent use of AI when advancing beyond research use to practical, real-world applications of AIED. By comparing outcomes under different conditions, analyzing multimodal data, and collaborating with international experts, the project develops ethical, innovative methods for integrating AI for education, ensuring students receive the support they need.
