Project description

GENTRY is a research project funded by the Academy of Finland and carried out by the Department of Education at the University of Jyväskylä to investigate how learning generations are built in the workplace and how learning takes place within and between generations at work. The research draws on Mannheim's theory of social generations and practice-based learning theory, applying them from a social ecological perspective. Within the ethnographic approach, different qualitative (observation and interviews) and quantitative (survey) data collection and analysis tools (narrative, thematic, statistical modelling) are used in the health and ICT sectors in Finland, Denmark and Sweden. The study will provide new theoretical insights into generational learning that can be used to generate human sustainability at work. In addition, the new knowledge will help policy makers to consider the importance of generational learning at work in strengthening work engagement and reducing labor shortages.
