Finance graduate building a career in Finland

How has your career developed after the programme?

My career has stayed closely aligned with my field of study in finance and banking. Before coming to Finland, I already had some experience working in banking in Vietnam, and my studies in Jyväskylä helped me deepen that knowledge and understand the European financial system.

After graduating, it took some time to find the right opportunity, but I gradually built my career step by step. 

I worked while studying and continued developing my skills, and after returning to Vietnam for a period, I came back to Finland with a clearer focus on my career goals. Eventually, I secured a role in the financial sector, where I now work in an international environment.

In my current role, I also continue learning new technical skills, such as working with data and reporting tools, to match the requirements of the industry. The learning process has not stopped after graduation—it has become a continuous part of my career.

Which part of your studies or student life has helped you the most in your career?

The most important support I gained from my studies was a deeper understanding of banking systems and financial policies, especially within the Finnish and European context. This made it easier for me to transition into the local job market and understand how the industry operates.

Equally important were the connections I built during my studies. My classmates and network helped me learn about job opportunities and better understand what employers expect. I also found great inspiration from my professors. I will always be thankful to my teachers, especially the one who instructed me on my Master’s thesis.

These connections and insights were often just as valuable as the formal courses, as they helped me navigate my career path more effectively.

What are your ambitions for the future?

In the future, I want to continue developing my career in finance and banking. I am interested in expanding my expertise and possibly moving into more advanced or specialised roles within the industry, whether in banking institutions or on the business side.

For now, my focus is on gaining more experience, learning new skills and adapting to changes in the financial sector. I see continuous development as essential, especially in a field that evolves quickly due to technology and regulation.

Do you have any advice for students who are interested in pursuing a career in this field?

For students interested in finance or banking, I would recommend thinking carefully about what kind of role you want and what skills it requires. The industry is highly regulated and competitive, so it is important to understand expectations early and prepare accordingly.

Being proactive is key. It helps to reach out to people working in the field, learn from job postings and stay informed about different career paths. Universities, teachers and professional networks can provide valuable guidance, but students also need to take initiative themselves.

Good communication skills are especially important in an international environment, as well as the ability to understand different cultures and perspectives. If you stay active, curious and willing to learn, you can find your place and grow within the industry.
