New professors

Johanna Annala studies how educational and curriculum changes transform the idea of university education and academic communities in the long run, what are the special features when universities with different traditions are approaching each other in curriculum and teaching, and what is the meaning of these changes to faculty members, students and society. The title of Annala’s inauguration lecture is "Opetussuunnitelma korkeakoulupedagogisen tutkimuksen risteyksenä (Curriculum as a crossroads for higher education pedagogy research)".

Timo Hinrichs examines the role of physical activity in maintaining health, supporting rehabilitation, and enhancing quality of life. At the core of his work is the use and implementation of digital solutions to support mobility and health of older people. In addition, Hinrichs develops and evaluates exercise-based rehabilitation and health promotion programmes for individuals with acute health events, long-term conditions, or age-related limitations. He also studies how individual and environmental factors influence mobility, participation, and everyday functioning. The title of Hinrichs’s inauguration lecture is "Staying mobile when health conditions emerge: context matters".

Tiina Parviainen’s research aims to enhance the interpretability of brain imaging measures to advance neuroscience knowledge, particularly in developmental, educational and clinical contexts. She also investigates the interactions between the body and brain systems and the impact of this interaction on individual experience and behavioral capacity, both in short- and long-term scenarios. The title of Parviainen’s inauguration lecture is "Miten mieli syntyy aivoissa? (How does the mind emerge from brain activity?)".

New professors

Arto Hautala’s research field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation is multidisciplinary. Current themes include maintaining the health and functional capacity of the ageing population, remote rehabilitation and digital services, as well as AI-based solutions for more efficient services. Changes in working life, barriers to effective stress management strategies, and support for mental health also create new demands for research on physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The title of Hautala’s inauguration lecture is "Fysioterapian ja kuntoutuksen tulevaisuus: ihminen, teknologia ja vaikuttavuus samassa liikkeessä (Future of physiotherapy and rehabilitation: human, technology and effectiveness in the same movement)".

Leena Paakkari investigates children’s and adolescents’ health, health behaviour and related inequality issues. Her aim is to use research data to identify risk factors and protective factors as well as to gain further knowledge about the specific groups of young people among whom the vulnerabilities tend to accumulate. Such research can show how various behavioural mechanisms affect these phenomena. This way, research can provide a basis for targeted measures, policies and services to improve young people’s well-being and promote the reduction of health-related disparities in society. The title of Paakkari’s inauguration lecture is "Miten terveyden lukutaito rakentaa hyvinvointia ja yhdenvertaisuutta? Tutkimuksesta vaikuttamiseen (How does health literacy improve well-being and equality? From research to impact)".

Riikka Kivelä investigates various health-related effects of physical activity at the cellular and molecular level. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the health effects of physical activity makes it possible to develop new, more effective means for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases as well as metabolic diseases. The title of Kivelä’s inauguration lecture is "Miten liikunta tekee meistä terveempiä? Solutason mekanismeista ihmiskehon vasteisiin (How does physical activity make us healthier? From cell-level mechanisms to the body responses)".
