A researcher from the University of Jyväskylä was selected to participate in the prestigious Global Young Scientists Summit

Postdoctoral Researcher Himanshu Shekhar from the Department of Physics and the Center for Nanoscience at the University of Jyväskylä, has been selected to participate in the Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2027, which will be held in Singapore on 4.-8.1.2027. Each year, the event brings together the world’s most promising young scientists to discuss current challenges in science and future solutions.

Technology Academy Finland selected Himanshu as one of Finland’s 12 nominees from a pool of 160 applicants. After this, the organizers of GYSS confirmed his final selection.

The Global Young Scientists Summit offers young researchers a unique opportunity to meet leading experts from various scientific fields, including Nobel laureates, and to build international collaboration networks.

- I am extremely happy and honoured by this selection. GYSS is a wonderful opportunity to meet and learn from some of the world’s leading scientists, exchange ideas with young researchers from different disciplines, and present my own research to both fellow young scientists and senior researchers. I am very grateful for the opportunity to take part in GYSS 2027, says Postdoctoral Researcher Himanshu Shekhar from the University of Jyväskylä.

JYU's research is visible on the international stage

At the University of Jyväskylä, Himanshu works in the Department of Physics and Nanoscience Center, where he uses molecular simulations to investigate how the nanoscale structure of plant cell walls forms. His research focuses particularly on how cellulose and hemicelluloses interact during the formation of cellulose microfibrils and larger cell-wall structures.

- By revealing molecular-level mechanisms that are difficult to observe directly in experiments, the work aims to improve our understanding of how plant-cell-wall structure develops and how it influences material properties, ultimately supporting the informed design and use of renewable plant-based materials, explains Himanshu.

Himanshu also sees his participation as an opportunity to promote the high-quality research carried out at the University of Jyväskylä on the international stage.

- International meetings are important for researchers’ career development and for generating new research ideas. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to present the University of Jyväskylä and Finland at the event, says Himanshu.

GYSS is one of the world’s best-known science events for young researchers. It offers participants the opportunity to explore current issues in science and build networks for future international research collaboration.
