The nine-month training programme incorporates Finnish language studies, academic skills training and subject-specific content, while also integrating students into Finnish education and society.

This full-time programme is organised as contact teaching at the University of Jyväskylä. It is organised by Movi, the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication at the University of Jyväskylä.

Training for highly educated immigrants

This training is intended for immigrants with a higher education background, or who are eligible for higher education studies. Thus, the applicants should have a higher education degree or a qualification equivalent to the matriculation examination. The required minimum language proficiency level for Finnish and English is A2.

“This training is well suited to people who want to continue or supplement their studies in their own field or find employment in it, but whose Finnish language proficiency is not yet sufficient for this,” says the programme coordinator Tuija Lehtonen. “The training programme pays particular attention to the idea that all skills to be learnt support both employment and academic studies.”

The application period for the next intake is starting soon

JYU.INTEGRA supports immigrants who want to study at university or find jobs in their own field that match their level of education in Finland. This training can also serve as self-managed integration education, meaning a student may be entitled to unemployment benefits.

“In the training programme, we start from the student’s goals and prior skills,” says Lehtonen. “This approach is used in both Finnish and English language studies. For example, students often have an impressive range of language skills, and these are utilised in language teaching. An especially important aspect is that students have the opportunity to take courses in their own fields as well, and the content and learning practices of these courses are integrated into language teaching.”

This is the seventh time the training has been provided, and it has so far involved more than 140 students. The students’ progress after the programme is systematically monitored for a couple of years, and within a year of completing the training, most of them have managed to enter their desired field, either for study or employment. Feedback from the students themselves has been very positive.

The application period for the next JYU.INTEGRA training opens on 13 April 2026 and closes on Sunday, 26 April 2026. The training programme will begin in August 2026 and end in early June 2027.
