Project description

Even though the effectiveness of psychological treatments has received a lot of research attention, the training of psychotherapists and other mental health professionals to deliver these treatments has been understudied. There is not much scientific evidence available of the importance of therapists' skillfulness for successful treatment delivery. This project will focus on creating and studying a novel evaluation method for measuring and tracking psychotherapists' skillfulness or competence. The results can be utilized in building and developing evidence-based training practices.

The method will be tested to see if it can differentiate between novice therapists and experienced therapists, and if it is sensitive enough to detect increases in competence-levels during training. In addition, this project will examine if therapist competence is associated with treatment outcome in the treatment of mood problems.
