Skills, support, and physical activity - TAITURIT-study

Taiturit is a longitudinal research project conducted in Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä during years 2021-2023. It is funded by Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Taiturit study continues follow-up of the same families with children who participated in Skilled Kids (2015-2017) and Active Family (2018-2020) studies.

Project description

Motor skills and social support  lead to physical activity through developmental mechanisms

Research perspectives

Physical inactivity in children is widespread and increases with age. Inactivity associates with increased risk of health problems. Therefore, this project will test mechanisms leading to physical (in)activity in children. The project adopts a geographically randomized and representative longitudinal design with altogether three time points, at children’s ages of 3-7-years, 7-10-years and 11-12-years (aimed amount of children = 932). The study will test two main hypotheses. First, motor competence in early and middle childhood predicts physical activity later in childhood and health-related fitness is the mechanism which explains this association. Second, social support from important others in early and middle childhood predicts physical activity later in childhood and physical literacy explains this association. New knowledge leads to better tools for physical activity services and help to develop more effective physical activity interventions in families, health care and sport clubs.

Societal influence

The newest research-based knowledge from Taiturit study (as well as from the preceding Skilled Kids and Active Family studies) is converted to acts promoting physical activity in children through national programmes, such as Liikkuva perhe and Liikkuva varhaiskasvatus.  These programmes are among the national Liikkuvat programmes which support the aims set by current Finnish government to promote physical activity in Finnish population. Main figures of Taiturit research (Arto Laukkanen, Arja Sääkslahti and Donna Niemistö) are actively working in these national programmes. Additionally, Arto, Arja and Donna work as physical education teacher educators in the University of Jyväskylä at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences.
