Doctoral studies: Main stages in applying

After the expiration of the application period, the Faculty will seek recommendation for the application from the specialisation. Each specialisation has a group that assesses the applications in accordance with their own requirements. The Faculty sends the applications to the contact person of the relevant group.

The group records the endorsements into a statement. The chairperson or the secretary of the group will submit the statement to the faculty.

• If the application is not endorsed, the justification is recorded as a part of the statement.
• If the application is endorsed, a proposal for the appointment of the supervisor-in-charge and at least one additional supervisor and the follow-up group for the applicant is included in the statement.

The vice dean responsible of research either accepts or rejects the application based on the recommendations of the above-mentioned instances. 

The doctoral studies coordinator will inform all applicants about the decision. 

The doctoral programme of the Faculty of Information Technology evaluates your prerequisites for doctoral studies and the faculty's possibilities for organizing appropriate supervision. Applications are first processed by research field and then by the management team of the doctoral programme. The actual decision on student selection is made by the faculty's vice dean responsible for research. You will receive information about the decision by e-mail to the e-mail address you provided in the application.

The JSBE Research Committee acts as the evaluation group for the applications. After the application period ends, the eligibility and admission requirements of each applicant are checked. Only eligible applications are evaluated. 

Applications are assessed according to the admission criteria. The fulfilment of the admission criteria is assessed based on the application and the submitted educational documents and attachments. Therefore, the applicant must ensure that all required documents are submitted according to the instructions. Even if the applicant otherwise meets the eligibility requirements, but has not submitted the required attachments in the required manner, they do not meet the admission criteria and thus cannot be admitted.

The JSBE Research Committee prepares the admission proposal, and the faculty's Vice Dean for research decides on the granting of the right to postgraduate studies based on this proposal. Applicants are informed of the admission decisions by email according to the schedule announced on the Apply to Doctoral Studies page.

Once the application period has ended, the faculty will forward the applications for doctoral study rights to the relevant specialisation which will process and evaluate the applications in accordance with its own practices.

The group will record the decisions made in favor of the applications, and the information will be forwarded to the faculty. If an application is not approved, the reasons for the negative decision are recorded.

The vice dean responsible for research makes the decision based on the proposals of the above-mentioned bodies. The faculty informs all applicants of the selection decision.

The steering group for the faculty's doctoral programme acts as the evaluation group for the applications. After the application period ends, the eligibility and admission requirements of each applicant are checked. Only eligible applications are evaluated.

After the application period has closed, applicants’ eligibility to apply, the fulfillment of language skill requirements and the authenticity of application documents are checked. Representatives of the specialisation option applied will evaluate the potential of the applicant to succeed in their studies and the possibility to organize supervision on the topic indicated in the application. 

Applicants may be interviewed and/or asked to provide a video. Applicants will be contacted if they are invited for an interview. Instructions for a video, if needed, will be given in the application instructions or in person after the application period has ended.
