The themes of the Winter School focus on the sustainability and marketing of winter sports, tourism, and events. In addition, the program addresses challenges posed by climate change to winter sports conditions and the international marketing of mass sports events. During the Winter School, students will work on assignments in collaboration with the local ski club SkiJyväskylä and Jyväslumi Oy, which manages the early-season snow activities in Laajavuori.

In addition to lectures, Winter School students will actively participate in various winter sports activities guided by advanced students of sport pedagogy.

“Outdoor winter activities such as skiing and hiking provide a unique way to gain knowledge and understanding of Finland and northern conditions in general. This allows us to experience and reflect on theoretical topics—such as climate change—also through practical engagement,” says University Lecturer Hanna Vehmas from the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences.

The Winter School instructors include international researchers and teachers in the social sciences of sport, as well as practical experts in sport management. The Winter School is part of the European Erasmus BIP (Blended Intensive Programme).
