Project description

The PATHWAYS project follows young people recently arrived in Finland as they transition from preparatory to basic or upper secondary education, and into more independent participation in Finnish society.

This mixed-methods study, in WP1 makes use of existing quantitative data on students' skill development and school engagement during preparatory education in 2024 and 2025 (VOITTO project, 2023–2025), combining it with information on their subsequent educational journeys. In WP2, this picture is further refined through interviews with the students themselves, as well as ecomaps created by them and interviews with other significant individuals in their lives. Additionally, information is collected through interviews with preparatory education teachers. The multi-site ethnographic part of the WP3 involves observing young people's communities, interviewing them and asking them to create ecomaps. Guided by professional artists from our partner Tiuku ry, young students will be able to document their lives through photography.

PATHWAYS reveals the conditions and actions in schools and society that facilitate the seamless integration of migrant young people into new communities and their educational journeys. These results will be implemented through peer mentoring, further teacher training, and art exhibitions. These results can inform the development of more equitable education and migration policies.
