Towards Future Careers: Meeting Career Demands and Advancing Sustainability through Ecosystem Collaboration (ToFuCa)

The world of work is being transformed by artificial intelligence, digitalization, the green transition, demographic change, and geopolitical uncertainty. These developments create new career demands while challenging employees’ well-being, employability, and productivity. The ToFuCa project investigates how sustainable careers can be built and maintained in this rapidly changing environment and what kinds of solutions are needed at the individual, organizational, and societal levels.

Project description

The project views careers as part of a career ecosystem, where individuals, organizations, and society continuously influence one another. Particular attention is paid to emerging career demands, career shocks, and career resilience, that is, the capacity to adapt, learn, and sustain one’s career in the face of uncertainty and change.

The research consists of four interconnected work packages:

  • WP1: career demands, career shocks, and career resilience among employees and their links to well-being, employability, and productivity.
  • WP2: the role of organizations, leadership, and HR practices in supporting sustainable careers.
  • WP3: societal structures, policy frameworks, and public discourse related to sustainable careers.
  • WP4: integration of findings and co-creation of evidence-based solutions for promoting sustainable careers through ecosystem collaboration.

The project combines unique and large-scale research data. A longitudinal survey of approximately 10,000 Finnish employees will be conducted. The project also utilizes existing longitudinal datasets, organizational interviews, policy documents, and public discussions related to working life. Together, these data provide a comprehensive understanding of the conditions that support sustainable careers in a changing world of work.

ToFuCa will generate evidence-based knowledge and practical recommendations for employees, organizations, career professionals, and policymakers. The project aims to promote well-being, employability, lifelong learning, and sustainable careers in a changing world of work.
