Sport Pedagogy Research Hub
Research in sport pedagogy examines education for and through physical activity across the life course. The field particularly addresses school physical education, physical education teacher education, and the physical, social, psychological, and cognitive determinants and outcomes of an active lifestyle.

Research group description
The Sport Pedagogy Research hub consists of researchers and experts in Sport Pedagoy and Physical Education at the University of Jyväskylä. We work closely with researchers in the same field at other universities, both in Finland and internationally.
The research hub is led by four professors:
- Professor Arja Sääkslahti, Sport Pedagogy and physical education didactics
- Professor Timo Jaakkola, Sport Pedagogy and physical literacy
- Associate Professor (tenure track) Kasper Salin, Sport Pedagogy and learning environments
- Assistant Professor (tenure track) Mikko Huhtiniemi, Sport Pedagogy and adapted physical activity
The research hub employs numerous senior, postdoctoral and doctoral researchers.
Research
We conduct multidisciplinary, high-level research for the benefit of science, society, and individuals. The sport pedagogy network includes over 50 researchers and experts, the majority of whom are based at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, University of Jyväskylä.
Education
In Finland, we are responsible for physical education teacher education and for the development of sport pedagogical expertise. We educate approximately 80 Master’s graduates in sport sciences annually and contribute extensively to continuing and lifelong learning initiatives.
Collaboration
We coordinate the national sport pedagogy research, education, and expert network, encompassing all eight Finnish universities that provide teacher education, and collaborate closely with other national and international actors in the field.
