At the Faculty of Mathematics and Science of the University of Jyväskylä, safety is studied broadly from the perspectives of multiple disciplines.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Technology for Safety and Risk Management is rooted in natural sciences. The program is developed by Senior Lecturer Moona Huttunen. The goal is to create a program that is cutting-edge and relevant to the real world.

A solid-phase extraction process enables the eco-friendly recovery of critical raw materials from NdFeB magnets. Over 96% of the rare earth elements in the permanent magnets were recovered, and the purity of the rare earth fraction was over 99%.

Construction of the new laboratory facilities of the Department of Chemistry in the YAD wing of the Ambiotica building is on schedule, with the facilities expected to be in University’s use on 21 August 2026.

Doctoral Researcher Janne Yliharju studied whether three-dimensional dual-energy X-ray imaging can be used to monitor water movement in bentonite clay. This study improves the understanding of the performance of this method through a concrete example.

The University of Jyväskylä’s role in the consortium is based on its strong expertise in silicon-based quantum technologies and advanced measurement methods. The project’s total budget is 50 million euros.

An extensive computational study examined nearly a hundred different combinations of clusters and biomolecules, the atomic structure of which was simulated using molecular dynamics. The research was published in the prestigious journal ACS Nano.
