The Faculty of Mathematics and Science was founded in 1965 and is one of the flagships of the University of Jyväskylä. The faculty conducts high-quality, high-impact basic research. The main celebration will take place on 6 November 2025.

Markus Kortelainen is new Professor of Theoretical Nuclear Structure Physics. In theoretical nuclear physics, researchers aim to understand the structure and reactions of atomic nuclei, as well as the fundamental interactions that govern them.

The results of the dissertation deepen understanding of how rodents and cervids influence Lyme borreliosis risk in Finland and highlight the complexity of disease ecology in northern boreal environment. Nosheen Kiran defends on 7.11.2025.

Ankita Naik prepared a series of binary organic radical ion salts and investigated their structure-property relationships for various applications. Her work paves the way for developing advanced memory devices, sensors for future technologies.

The University of Jyväskylä will lead the new Centre of Excellence in Quantum Materials. In addition, the University of Jyväskylä is participating in the Centre of Excellence in Neutron-Star Physics led by the University of Helsinki.

A collaboration between researchers at the University of Jyväskylä and Wroclaw University of Science and Technology highlights that understanding time-dependent quantum phenomena is essential for harnessing heat transfer in nanoscale systems.

Doctoral Researcher Dimitri Delcourt developed in his dissertation peptidic catenanes that incorporate biological building blocks such as arginine. Delcourt will defend on 31.10.2025.
