Information technology forms the basis for modern society. With technological development has come a myriad of new possibilities and challenges that significantly affect people’s daily lives and interaction in the knowledge society.

Information technology and people interact closely in the information society

The research in this strategic core field explores technology and the digitalization of society, focusing on our digital future from the perspectives of technology, information, innovation, business and people. The multidisciplinary research covers areas such as digital security, data-driven decision-making, learning analytics, quantum programming and computing, and the impact of digitalization on the well-being and health of individuals, communities, and society. Additionally, it examines changes in the future of work and working practices within the digital environment. 

Technology offers countless possibilities, but it also poses numerous challenges to individuals as well as society. We need to find a balance between the use of technology and human values, while ensuring that technology serves the common good and sustainable development.

Cooperation in this core field with other actors occurs on many levels, including through course and other study-related work for companies, teaching cooperation, and research and development projects carried out together with companies and other organizations. JYU is one of the two major university-level education providers in IT in Finland.
